Golf: World number one Lydia Ko became the youngest Australian Open winner yesterday, prevailing in her final round duel with South Korean Amy Yang to add another title to her ever-growing list of achievements. The 17-year-old from New Zealand shot a final round of two-under 71 for a two-shot victory over Yang at Royal Melbourne. “I’ve always played well in Australia, so it’s always cool coming back here,” said Ko, who claimed the title at nine-under ahead of Yang who carded 72 yesterday.

Cycling: Kristina Vogel retained her sprint title as Germany topped the medals table at the track cycling world championships on a chaotic day on Saturday. Despite a minor tumble in the preparatory laps in the first leg of the final, Vogel powered, after a restart, to a 2-0 victory against Elis Ligtlee of the Netherlands. Zhong Tianshi of China took the bronze. Germany, with three golds, one silver and three bronze medals, lead hosts France who have three golds and one bronze, which they collected in the men’s individual pursuit on Saturday. Julien Morice finished third in the event to snatch France’s first medal in the discipline since 1998.

Snooker: John Higgins (picture) returned to the winner’s podium for the first time since September 2012 last night. The 39-year-old Scot beat Ben Woollaston in the final of the Welsh Open in Cardiff, with his 9-3 success his first tournament win since the Shanghai Masters 30 months ago. That is a considerable wait for a man who has won the world title four times, but he looked back to his best in the Welsh capital as he got the better of final debutant Woollaston. It was a fourth Welsh title for the Wishaw man, giving him his own personal record.
