Fashion may well rival film in many people's appreciation of the Oscars with celebrities being named winners and losers of the red carpet.

According to a fashion expert on the ground, Sam Saboura, there were only two who were clear leaders in the fashion stakes.

"Well I love Julianne Moore. She was in a custom Chanel couture gown by Karl Lagerfeld. I thought it was very age appropriate and very beautiful. I have to say the fashion guy in me really loved Margot Robbie. I thought she was young and fresh, feminine and a little bit sexy

"It's a little bit of a surprise to see so many statement necklaces. Usually the Oscars have traditional collar necklaces done in diamonds but you saw Cate Blanchett in turquoise and diamonds. Scarlett Johansson's emerald green dress was sparkling with that really big statement piece. So it was unusual to see a little out of the box, less classic Hollywood glamour and more avant garde.

"One of the biggest surprises of the entire evening were definitely the men. Men's fashions are something that are usually a little more subdued on the red carpet, but tonight was about colour, about statement jackets, about red. David Oyelowo, I can't say his name well, but he looked amazing in that Marsala colour. Jared Leto, always out of the box, so I loved that blue suit. The men were right up there with the best dressed women."
