The Malta Model Boat Association Open National Championship, under the auspices of the Malta Sailing Federation, will be hosting its annual IOM Open Invitation from March 19 to 22 at Mellieħa Bay Hotel.

The event, to be supported by Thomas Smith Group for the third consecutive year, is set to attract the participation of 48 entries from all over Europe, including Sweden, Norway, Germany, Turkey, Italy, Holland and the UK. Malta will be represented by 12 skippers who will race their one-metre remote-controlled yachts.

“We believe it is important to sustain sports enthusiasts,” said Thomas Smith Group managing director Joe Gerada.

“We hope that through our contribution we will help MMBA achieve more awareness of the sport. The event is great fun and gathers both local and international enthusiasts of radio-controlled yacht racing.”

One-metre-long remotely-controlled sailing yachts are the most common type of radio-controlled sailing among hobbyists around the world.

The one-metre-long sailboats can reach speeds of 12mph, weigh a minimum of 4kg and race within strict class rules to the racing rules of sailing.
