The widow of cyclist Cliff Micallef, who was killed in a hit-and-run accident in 2009, is “shocked and let down” by the Constitutional Court’s decision to declare the driver’s statement during his interrogation inadmissible.

“The reasons brought forward were very, very weak,” Shirley Micallef told Times of Malta when contacted for a reaction to last week’s court decision.

Her husband died on impact when he was hit by a car at about 5am on July 30, 2009, by Anthony Taliana, who was 18 at the time, about 20 metres from the entrance to the White Rocks Complex on the Coast Road.

Last Wednesday, the court ruled Mr Taliana was “a vulnerable person” when he was interrogated by police and his human rights had been breached when he was not given the opportunity to consult a lawyer before questioning.
