Brazilian midfielder Bernard has not recovered from injury and will not be available for Shakhtar in their Champions League last 16 game against Bayern today.

Bernard and suspended defensive midfielder Taras Stepanenko did not fly to Lviv with the team.

The 22-year-old Bernard is recovering from inflammation of ankle ligaments, according to Football 1 television channel.

“Bernard is suffering from the inflammation of ligaments caused by workloads. But nothing serious, no surgery required,” club’s doctor Artur Glushchenko said.

Garcia diagnosed with leukaemia

Wigan Athletic’s Honduran defender Juan Carlos Garcia has been diagnosed with leukaemia, club manager Malky Mackay said.

Wigan announced last week that the 26-year-old, who has 34 international caps, was admitted to hospital after developing a blood disorder.

“He has a form of leukaemia. Juan Carlos is in the Christie Hospital in Manchester,” Mackay said.

“It’s something that is obviously a real blow for Juan Carlos’s family and everybody connected with the football club. We’re going to make sure he gets the best care possible.

“I went to see Juan Carlos and he was incredibly upbeat and his spirits were strong. Everybody at the club is wishing him all the best as I’m sure all our fans are,” said Mackay.

Simeone accepts blame for loss

Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone has accepted full responsibility for his side’s 2-0 defeat at Celta Vigo on Sunday.

The defending Primera Liga champions, who had beaten Real Madrid 4-0 in the previous round, delivered an under-par performance in Vigo and slumped their fifth loss of the campaign.

“In the first half I chose the wrong line-up,” he said.

“We lost 45 minutes because I chose badly. The fact is that we lacked balance, we gave away too many balls in midfield and we weren’t able to serve our strikers.

“It’s not (Fernando) Torres’ fault that he had to be replaced at half-time.”

Gutierrez back at Newcastle

Jonas Gutierrez may yet appear for Newcastle one final time following the collapse of a move to former club Velez Sarsfield.

Gutierrez, who has overcome testicular cancer, had held talks with Sarsfield chiefs about a switch to the Argentinian club prior to the closure of their transfer window on Sunday.

But the 31-year-old midfielder failed to finalise terms and yesterday returned to Tyneside.

With his contract due to expire in the summer, there is now an opportunity for Gutierrez to make a farewell appearance for United.

Buffon slams Juventus attitude

Gianluigi Buffon believes Juventus only have themselves to blame for failing to clinch three points at Cesena on Sunday.

Victory at the Stadio Dino Manuzzi would have seen Juve move nine points clear at the top of Serie A after Roma were held to a goallessdraw against Parma.

With the score tied at 2-2, Arturo Vidal missed a late penalty for Juve.

“We cannot go around throwing away opportunities like this one,” he said.

“The Roma result probably made us think this was going to be easy, but a team like ours cannot allow itself to be influenced by other games.

“It was a very unsatisfactory performance, especially the opening 20 minutes.”

Watzke hits out at Bayern Munich

Borussia Dortmund’s general manager Hans-Joachim Watzke has claimed that Bayern Munich tried to buy all of his side’s stars out of fear of losing their status as Germany’s top club.

Bayern succeeded in signing Mario Gotze and Robert Lewan-dowski from rivals Dortmund, who won the Bundesliga two years running before Bayern took the title again in 2013.

“They ripped our crown jewels Gotze and Lewandowski away from us and they were not the only players they made moves for,” Watzke said.

“That’s not the only reason we had become a major threat to Bayern because we also have a high popularity rating among fans.

“They wanted to destroy our successful team from 2012.”

Swans close to US investment

Swansea could receive American investment as early as next month, club director Huw Cooze said.

The Premier League club have been in talks with American businessmen John Jay Moores and Charles Noell since last autumn with the former owners of Major League baseball team the San Diego Padres set to make a significant cash injection in return for a 30 per cent stake in Swansea.

“Talks are on-going and there’s nothing on the table yet, no offer,” said Cooze, the Supporters’ Trust representative on the Swansea board.

“But I would imagine they would make that offer and be coming in here in the next month or so.”
