One of the most in-demand confectionery products during carnival is undoubtedly the prinjolata, a traditional local sweet made of specially-baked biscuits, nuts, candied peel and chocolate chips.

Portelli Confectionery in Victoria, also known by the family’s nickname Ta’ Locci, is renowned for its prinjolata. The nickname derives from the Italian dei dolci, meaning ‘of sweets’. In fact, the confectionery has been in operation for the past 55 years, specialising in traditional Maltese cakes and sweets. At Portelli Confectionary, one can find prinjolata up to Mother’s Day in May.
