Krishna Kobras beat Melita Bees last weekend to maintain their hopes of winning the Winter Wallop League at the Marsa oval.

No other result suited the Kobras except a victory as they batted first and posted another good score of 158 runs, almost identical to the previous week when they lost to leaders Marsa Magpies.

Nowell Khosla retired after 30 balls and 39 runs. He returned later in the innings to face five more balls and collected 16 other runs for a creditable effort.

Bikram Arora finally found some kind of form and made 40 runs and also retired. He hit two fours and two sixes along the way.

The Kobras will be banking on Arora in their remaining matches to continue vying for top spot.

Ramandeep Singh was the only other batsman to make it into double figures, 13 in all. Extras totalled 23.

Daniel Galea was an inspiration for the Bees, taking three wickets in his two-over spell. Tom Newell bowled well, taking one wicket and conceding 13 runs from his four overs. Paul Bradley was the other wicket-taker.

Newell was also in the batting action, making 23 runs from as many balls. Frank Spiteri was superb when hitting 51 runs from 30 balls faced which left his team-mates a five-run-an-over chase to beat Krishna Kobras.

Joy Ghoseroy hit 12 runs and Matt McKeogh had earlier made nine. Then, in a space of four overs, the game turned on its head.

Derek Ali was run out (nine runs), Tim Wheeler (also nine runs) was lbw and another run out, that of Bradley, had the Kobras back in the game.

When the 18th over began, the Bees had two wickets to make the required 17 runs.

Second ball of the over and a wicket falls. Spiteri walks back to the crease.

Two balls later, he takes a single which brought Galea to strike. The latter, however, was bowled and the Kobras won the match.

For the winners, Justin Farrin-Thorne, Khosla and Kevin Krishna took two wickets each.

The Kobras earned 16 points for their victory and jumped into second position as the Bees slipped to third. On Saturday, the Bees play Marsa Magpies.
