The family of a young mother who died last Sunday, five years after a horrific motorcycle accident, wants a positive message to come out of her story.

Angie Bajada suffered severe head injuries on May 17, 2010, in an accident that left her in a semi-conscious, vegetative state. At the time her daughter, Ally, was 19 months old. She died on Sunday night, aged 24.

“During these years we tried to give her the best. I tried to take her everywhere with me. We even went to Lourdes twice... Now God called her. There is a time and a reason for everything. If there is one thing people need to learn from this, it’s to appreciate life. Life has to be worth living,” said Angie’s mother, Anna.

I would love people not to look at it only as a tragedy but to feel inspired to live life to the fullest in her name

Angie’s best friend, Gillian Balani, agreed: “I would love people not to look at it only as a tragedy but to feel inspired to live life to the fullest in her name”.

On that fateful day, she went out with a friend to Birkirkara, where she met a young man who invited her for a ride round the block on his motorcycle.

They had driven towards Luqa and, as he negotiated a bend, he lost control of the motorcycle. Angie was thrown off the bike and the driver was hurled onto her.

A doctor who happened to be driving past stopped to give her first aid. The young man only suffered minor fractures.

The family received a phone call at about 3am telling them what had happened and rushed to hospital. Their daughter had to undergo brain surgery to stop the bleeding.

Since then her family have cared for Angie at their home in Ibraġġ. Her parents – Anna and Leslie – made it their mission to ensure Angie lived the best life possible.

“Ally is six now. She is a very bubbly little girl who loves her mother and was so caring towards her. She even fed her mother. At school she often spoke about her,” Ms Bajada said.

Last Friday, Angie started having trouble breathing and the family took her to hospital where she passed away on Sunday night.

“She passed away very peacefully,” her mother said, as she thanked everyone for the support shown throughout these years.

She also urged people who will be attending Angie’s funeral at Balluta Church on Thursday at 2pm to wear purple – Angie’s favourite colour.
