I would like to address this letter to Melita’s CEO.

What appalling PR. What a missed opportunity. You could have gained a lot of customer goodwill but your action has just the opposite result.

Always the stick, never the carrot. It would have cost Melita absolutely nothing to offer a 26c monthly discount to those who agreed to pay online. The people least able to pay online are the elderly, who do not understand the internet, and the poor who cannot afford it.

The bean counter who thought this one up deserves the sack not a bonus, as does the executive who implemented it.

An old English saying has it: “What is good for the goose is good for the gander”.

I will charge 31c to post my cheque in settlement of Melita’s service. Please note that as a generous gesture I have not costed my time to walk to and from the post box. I, for one, will not pay this farcical levy. If Melita do not want my €49.98 a month there are alternatives for both parties.

As matter of interest, ARMS Ltd sends a prepaid return envelope with their bill.
