I first met Joseph Gatt during my training at the Marsa A underground power station in the summer of 1961, and as motorcycle enthusiasts we frequently brought up the subject of motorcycles.

Although Joe was a highly qualified electrical power engineer from Faraday House, UK, he also had vast knowledge in various heavy mechanical plant and machinery, and he was a brilliant fault finder with a hands-on approach.

In 1977 he encountered his biggest technical challenge – that of assuming responsibility of heading a team, which included me, to plan the second extension of Marsa B power station, consisting of the refurbishment and installation of the second-hand generating plant brought over from the Quattro Venti power station in Palermo, Sicily.

Later on, the team led by Joe was engaged to plan another power station brought to Malta from Little Barford, UK, which was successfully installed near the other one in Marsa. The last job Joe was responsible for was in 1988 for the general planning of the four phases of Delimara power station, where it stands today.

Joe retired from the post of Enemalta head of electricity with great regret from his colleagues.

He was an honest and true gentleman and was always available to help others in any circumstance and did this with a smile. He was a strong and trustworthy person who always honoured his word.

Joe, I still have amazing memories of our long and true friendship and will have you in my thoughts until we meet again.
