Wirt Għawdex has completed the restoration of two statues near the Capuchin church in Victoria.

One statueopposite the church depicts Christ the Saviour, standing and holding a large cross. The sculptor is unknown but the relief of Our Lady of Sorrows on the statue’s plinth is by Gozitan sculptor and artist Ġużeppi Agius, known as il-Brejbex (1893-1948).

The statue had been badly eroded due to exposure to the elements and the restoration work included not only repairing the damage but also treating it to help prevent future damage. The white colour of the statue has been retained and the cross was repainted in its original brown colour.

The second statue, a few metres up the road, depicting St Francis holding a skull, is also the work of Agius.

The statue was in a very poor state and had practically broken in two. Previous repair work had rusted and split the stonework even further.

The old repairs were replaced with more modern materials and the original stone colour has been retained.
