During regular inspections by the Technical Regulations Division of the Malta Competition and Consumer Affairs Authority, officials came across a number of carnival costumes intended for children aged under seven, which contain drawstrings or cords around the neck.

The authority, which has ordered the removal of these garments from the market, would like to advise consumers to be aware of carnival costumes which have hoods or similar attachments around the neck.

These may be the cause of strangulation if they become entrapped to a solid object, such as playground equipment, with the child running the risk of being left dangling by the hood.

Moreover, clothes, including carnival costumes, intended for use by children older than seven should not have cords and drawstrings around the neck longer than 75mm on each side.

The authority therefore has asked parents and economic operators to ensure that clothes, including carnival costumes, intended to be worn by children aged up to seven, do not have such drawstrings, cords or laces. Any sellers found placing these products on the market will be liable to action to ensure the safety and health of children.
