Berlin Zoo gave the public its first look at Rieke, a baby orangutan that was abandoned by its mother and reared by zoo keepers.

Zoo Director Andreas Knieriem told reporters that Rieke has had a dramatic young life. Its mother refused to take on the baby and did not show any interest in the pup.

That was when zoo keepers decided to temporarily remove the young orangutan and try to reintroduce it to the mother in the hope that she might bond with it, Knieriem said.

When those attempts failed, zoo keepers decided to rear the baby by hand on their own, he said.
