Four Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft and a refuelling tanker flew in this evening on transit.

The aircraft arrived from the UK and are to overnight.

It is believed that they are on their way to the Gulf.

Another four aircraft are due tomorrow.

The government said clearance for the flights was given last month. The aircraft are not involved in operations against IS and their arrival has nothing to do with developments in Libya.

The government also warned against alarmist reports which could harm the country.

Typhoon aircraft are not involved in the bombing of IS targets in Syria. That operation is being carried out by Tornado bombers based in Cyprus.
