Organisers of the T in the Park music festival have announced that The Libertines will be one of the headline acts at this summer’s event. The indie rockers are the first to be named as performers at the festival taking place between July 10 and 12.

The group, formed by Pete Doherty and Carl Barat in 1997, scored top 40 hits with singles Time For Heroes and Don’t Look Back into the Sun, and their biggest hit Can’t Stand Me Now.

The four-piece parted company in 2004 but delighted fans when they reunited last summer with two shows at Glasgow’s Barrowlands before playing in front of a 60,000-strong crowd in London’s Hyde Park.

T in the Park celebrated its 21st birthday last year and it was staged at the disused Balado airfield in Kinross-shire for much of the last two decades.

This summer’s event will be the first festival to be held at T in the Park’s new home in the grounds of Strathallan Castle in Perthshire.

Festival director Geoff Ellis said: “The Libertines are a truly iconic British band, revered as cult heroes by a generation of music fans and adored by the Scottish crowd.

“They chose Scotland as the destination for their live return on home soil last June, and raised the roof of the Barrowlands with two exhilarating shows. We can’t wait to welcome them back in what is a historic year for T in the Park, as we take up residency at our beautiful new home, Strathallan Castle.

“It’s going to be a very special year for T in the Park, and we can’t wait to welcome you all to Strathallan.”

A formal planning application has been lodged to host the festival at Strathallan Castle after DF Concerts, which runs T in the Park, announced it would be moving last summer as safety concerns grew over the proximity of the Balado site to a large oil pipeline.

Tickets for the festival go on sale on February 27.
