Hugging pillows to sit on, around 1,800 St Monica students heard Mass at St Theresa church, Birkirkara, commemorating the death of Teresa Spinelli, foundress of the Augustinian Sisters Servants of Jesus and Mary.

Mass was celebrated by Michael Bugeja, while the Music Ministry of the Birkirkara and Gżira schools animated the Mass with dance, song and sign language.

This year, the Augustinian Sisters mark the 225th birth anniversary of their foundress. Mother Spinelli’s strong faith in God’s will, her progressive belief in providing education for girls of all social classes and her sheer determination led to the setting up of the first school in Frosinone, Italy.

Over the years, her vision has taken root in four continents, where the Sisters have striven hard to provide basic care and education to so many ‘princesses’, as Mother Spinelli so fondly referred to her students.
