Din l-Art Ħelwa inaugurated a new grove at Xagħra l-Ħamra within the Majjistral Park. Among the guests were Environment Minister Leo Brincat, Majjistral chairman Sammy Vella, Mellieħa mayor John Buttigieg and Middleasea Insurance’s assistant general manager Fernando Docampo.

During the event, DLĦ president Simone Mizzi planted two more trees to add to the 200 recently planted by Middlesea Insurance and MSV Life volunteers.

Mizzi said the event opened the heritage NGO’s 50th anniversary celebrations, adding it was a sad fact that open spaces in our countryside were being encroached upon.

The Minister said half a century of work was a praiseworthy milestone. DLĦ was created at a time when there was little awareness about the natural and built environment.

“The government will continue to encourage the Majjistral Park board and is appreciative of initiatives by private entities for sustaining environmental activities,” he added.

Sammy Vella praised the NGO’s untiring work, stressing that the park was for people’s enjoyment.
