I have been following the sad case of the Leisure Clothing saga.

As a citizen, I feel I have to voice my deep concern and frustration at how such a factory can be allowed to operate practically with impunity. Even now, despite the obvious terrible facts continuously emerging, the whole operation has not been stopped for good.

We talk about clamping down on precarious work in Malta. Well, people are being exploited and humiliated before our very eyes, working inhuman hours and ‘paid’ with the equivalent of pocket money while their bosses get their fat thousands.

Such factories of human misery should have no place in Malta. What further evidence is needed to stop those who are exploiting these workers? We need to be sensitive to human suffering wherever it is found, especially on our own soil.

I know that these foreign Asian factory workers are not members of our Maltese unions but couldn’t our unions, in the face of such blatant exploitation, in the name of workers’ solidarity, try to help them in some way.

Or are these workers simply children of a lesser God and we all turn a blind eye as if nothing is wrong?
