A Somali man this afternoon pleaded not guilty to trying to steal a man’s wallet.

Prosecuting Inspector Trevor Micallef told the court the police had received reports that Abdirashid Hamud, 28, was speaking to a man on a bus stop and tried to steal his wallet twice.

He objected to a request for bail, saying the victim still had to testify.

However, lawyer Yana Micallef Stafrace pointed out to Magistrate Ian Farrugia that Mr Hamud had lived in Malta for several years, had a fixed address and had even applied for a residence permit.

Magistrate Farrugia refused bail and the man in custody.
