Valletta 2018 Foundation chairman Jason Micallef has lashed out against plans to relocate the monti to Ordnance Street between the new parliament building and the open theatre. He also expressed himself against the new stalls’ controversial design.

“The foundation does not see the move as befitting the architectural fabric of the city’s entrance nor will it benefit Maltese culture in the run up to 2018. Particular attention should be paid to respecting the area between the new Parliament building and Pjazza Teatru Rjal,” he said.

Mr Micallef was asked to comment by Times of Malta in the wake of the barrage of criticism levelled against the new design of the monti stalls, which experts branded as “mediocre” and “very poor”.

In his comments, Mr Micallef did not mince words expressing himself against “the decision, the design and the concept of the new monti stalls and their location”.

Mr Micallef, a former general secretary of the Labour Party, also lamented that the foundation had not been consulted about the matter and urged for common sense to prevail. He called for a holistic approach to finding a common solution in the best interest of the capital.
