A Libyan man was today handed a suspended sentence and fined €4,000 after pleading guilty to theft and to fracturing a constable's thumb as he searched him for a stolen mobile inside the Nationalist Party club in Hamrun.

Ahmed Nasre Abdallah Imhamed, 19, pleaded guilty to the offence that took place at around 4am on Christmas Day.

The court heard how a woman had gone to the police station to report the theft of her mobile phone while she was at the bar. She returned to the bar accompanied by two policemen.

Police Constable Brian Tonna saw the accused acting suspiciously and approached him to carry out a body search. As soon as the constable found the mobile hidden in the Libyan's sock, Mr Imhamed kicked him, fracturing his finger in the process.

Mr Imhamed pleaded guilty to assaulting and seriously injuring the police officer, threatening the police, disobeying their orders, breaching the peace and stealing the Samsung mobile phone.

Magistrate Anthony Vella jailed Mr Imhamed for two years suspended for four years and fined him €4,000.

Police Inspector Robert Vella prosecuted while lawyer Leon Bencini appeared for the accused.
