Carnival costumes for children aged seven and under should not have cords that tie around the neck, the consumer affairs watchdog said yesterday.

It has ordered the removal of such drawstrings following an inspection of carnival costumes by its technical regulations division.

The consumers affairs authority warned that a child could be strangled if the hood attached to a costume got caught on something such as playground equipment.

Clothes intended for use by children older than seven should not have cords that are longer than 75 mm on each side of the neck.

“Any economic operator found placing these products on the market will be liable to action to ensure the safety and health of consumers,” the regulator warned.
