Nadur Youngsters opened a six-point lead at the top of the standings over second-placed Xewkija Tigers after coming from behind to overcome the strong challenge of Victoria Hotspurs.

Nadur are still unbeaten in the league and victory meant they will approach the decisive clash against Xewkija with at least a three-point margin as the Tigers have a match in hand.

Nadur dictated matters for long stretches against the Hotspurs and created some very good scoring opportunities through Claudio Antunes, Joseph Vella, Milos Stojanovic and Mark Hyzler.

However, Nadur were rather erratic in front of goal and Victoria goalkeeper Matthew Vella was also behind a series of fine saves to deny the leaders.

But the Hotspurs emerged from the tunnel with renewed vigour and opened the score on 53 minutes when Felipe Aguiar hit home after pouncing on a bad clearance.

Nadur were stunned but they were soon back in business as Antunes made it one-all on 65 minutes and the same striker put his team in front with a second goal eight minutes from time.

Antunes now has ten goals and is second in the scorers’ list behind Xewkija’s Dene Shields who leads with 12 goals.

In the other match from the top flight last weekend, St Lawrence Spurs continued to impress after beating SK Victoria Wanderers 3-1 to move to a safe position in the table.

The Wanderers, who had some regulars missing due to suspensions, failed to capitalise on a few clear-cut chances that came their way, particularly at the feet of Sunday Baala, Eman Bugeja and Joel Xuereb.

St Lawrence had William Barbosa deployed in attack and his probing was leaving the desired effect as they opened the score on 36 minutes through Cedric Sciberras.

The Spurs were all over their opponents at the start of the second half and Barbosa was twice on the right spot to put his team 3-0 ahead.

The Wanderers pulled one back from a penalty scored by Baala but they rarely threatened after that.

St Lawrence could have added to their tally but Matthias Uzor had a goal disallowed for offside and on another occasion the Nigerian had a shot crashing against the bar.

Division Two

Leaders Għajnsielem conceded their second league defeat this season after going down to mid-table side Xagħra United 2-1.

Daniel Bartolo put Xagħra in front but the Blacks levelled on 50 minutes through Charlon Tabone.

Għajnsielem applied some pressure on the Xagħra defence but the Blues clinched victory with a goal scored by substitute Luke Attard eight minutes from time.

In stoppage time Għajnsielem also had Robert Grima sent off for a foul away from the action.

In another match Għarb Rangers and Qala Saints shared the spoils in a 2-2 draw.

John Rapa put Qala Saints in front early on but Għarb hit back strongly and Daniel Muscat made it one-all on the half hour mark.

Qala had goalkeeper Franco Buttigieg sent off on 65 minutes after giving away a penalty and from the spot-kick Justin Azzo-pardi made it 2-1.

However, the Maroons saved the result when from a free-kick action Manuel Buttigieg restored parity.
