A Bulgarian woman told a court today that she had no idea that begging was a crime in Malta as she pleaded guilty to begging in Sliema on Thursday.

Vasilka Yordanova, 35, pleaded guilty to living an idle life and to molesting people with her requests for money. She was arrested by police as she was begging outside the Zara outlet in Sliema.

Magistrate Neville Camilleri conditionally discharged the woman for five months.

Police Inspector Jason Sultana prosecuted while lawyer Leontine Calleja appeared for the woman.
