A total of 18 hotels were expected to avail themselves of schemes to expand their operations at a projected total cost of €100 million over four years, Tourism Minister Edward Zammit Lewis told Parliament yesterday.

Answering a question by Opposition MP Ċensu Galea, the minister said one application had been approved under the first policy in October 2013 and nine others under the second policy.

The nine proposals had been received in September and October 2014 and approved in parallel by the Malta Tourism Authority and Mepa.

Dr Zammit Lewis said the upgrades were expected to result in an increase of 0.4 per cent in employment, accompanied by an increase of 0.3 per cent in GDP.

The applicants included a four-star hotel in Gozo, which was still to be built.
