A renowned architect who was denied a prestigious design award has finally been honoured – 70 years on.

Berlin native Antony Wolffe came top of his class at Edinburgh College of Art (ECA) in 1944 but the medal he should have won was offered to another student because of sensitivity over the war with Germany.

The 94-year-old, who was presented with the City of Edinburgh Medal for Civic Design in a ceremony at the ECA which is hosting a retrospective of his work, said: “I am chuffed. I never thought this would happen. It is wonderful and extraordinary. I’ve lived longer than I ever thought I truly would, so to see this exhibition of my work and to finally receive this medal, it is quite exciting.”

Flamingos on film at reserve

Keepers are using photographs and video to carry out their annual count of Britain’s biggest flamingo flock.

Greater flamingos at WWT Slimbridge Wetland Centre in Gloucestershire have bred so well that keepers are unable to keep track of their numbers by eye.

Last year, 350 of the birds were counted at the centre, where they live at the country’s largest flamingo lagoon – the size of two Olympic-sized swimming pools.

Wheelchair thief caught on CCTV

A shoplifter who apparently posed as a wheelchair user before stealing food is being hunted by police.

The woman and a male accomplice got away with a haul of stolen meat from Marks and Spencer in Coventry earlier this month. CCTV footage released by West Midlands Police shows the woman initially being pushed around the store, but later she gets up out of her wheelchair unaided and walks to a nearby shelf before removing items.

Double drunk problem for police

Police in a Dallas suburb say a drunken driver crashed into an empty squad car while officers were busy dealing with another drunken driver they had pulled over.

Grand Prairie police say a third driver then crashed into another empty squad car, but this driver was not drunk or high.

Officers pulled over the first driver at around 3am and ended up arresting that person for driving while intoxicated.

Arrested nude violin player sues

An Oregon man arrested after playing a violin while naked outside the federal courthouse in Portland last year is suing the police.

Matthew T. Mglej, 25, claims authorities used excessive force and violated his First Amendment rights. He named the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office and Portland Police Bureau as defendants in a lawsuit filed last week, and he’s seeking 1.1 million US dollars in damages.

Police showed up after receiving complaints about the demonstration, during which the man played violin, meditated and quoted former Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. They said they arrested him for indecent exposure and carried him to a patrol car when he refused to walk. Mglej claims jail deputies cut his wrists by jerking on his handcuffs and called him names when he cried from the pain.

Moustache move by lift-sharers

The pink moustache is out.

Ride-sharing company Lyft has pulled the pink furry moustache that drivers display on the front of their cars and replaced it with a five-inch-long pink “glowstache” that goes on the dashboard.

About 300 Lyft drivers formed a line that stretched three blocks from the company’s San Francisco headquarters while they waited to receive the new glow-in-the-dark moustache for their cars. Lyft is one of several companies that allow customers to use a smartphone app to book and pay for rides in a private car.
