The daughter of chat show host Joan Rivers is suing the New York clinic where her mother had an endoscopy and later died.
A lawyer for Melissa Rivers said she is also suing doctors who treated her mother before her death. In a statement, Rivers said she is suing so that no other family had to go through what she did.
Joan Rivers died last September at the age of 81. The city’s medical examiner found she died of brain damage due to lack of oxygen after she stopped breathing during an endoscopy days earlier.
The federal Centres for Medicare and Medicaid Services cited the clinic for failing to identify deteriorating vital signs and provide timely intervention.
The clinic could lose its Medicare accreditation.
A statement by Yorkville Endoscopy said it was not appropriate to comment on the lawsuit. It extended condolences to the family.
