Veteran singer Marianne Faithfull has developed an infection in her hip after undergoing surgery last year, forcing her to postpone a series of live dates.

The 68-year-old, who is also an actress, needs to undergo a further operation to restore her health.

She had been due to play a number of concert dates in France, Japan, Greece and Turkey from next month but they are all to be rescheduled for the autumn.

The prosthesis is infected

Faithfull broke her hip in Rhodes last May, which led to emergency surgery.

A statement issued on her behalf said: “The hip continued to cause problems throughout the year and investigations have revealed that the prosthesis is infected. Marianne will now undergo surgery in Paris.”

Faithfull, who famously dated Mick Jagger in the 1960s, has had a number of health woes in recent years. In 2013 she had to reschedule shows after breaking a bone in her back while holidaying in the US.

The star – known for top 10 hits such as As Tears Go By and who starred in films such as Girl on a Motorcycle – spent four weeks in hospital as a result of the fracture to her sacrum.

She was also treated for breast cancer in 2006 and the following year she revealed she had hepatitis C.
