Commuters caught in Msida during Monday’s heavy downpour were left fuming as they could no longer avoid the worst flooded areas because of the new traffic arrangements meant to ease congestion.

Following the changes, all Sliema-bound traffic proceeding from Pietà had to go through the traffic lights in front of the Labour Party club, as the alternative access through the raised ramp adjacent to the boċċi club was blocked with bollards.

Commuters, thus, had no other option than try to negotiate their way through the rushing waters coming from Valley Road, with the risk of getting stranded if their engine stalled.

Several irate drivers vented their frustration through social media pointing out that, in such an emergency, the least the authorities could have done was to remove the bollards.

Others could not help but notice how the ramp, which had been purposely constructed to cater for such emergencies in this flood-prone area, was not being used.

Questions sent to Transport Malta yesterday were not answered by the time of writing.
