Prolifically produced worldwide since its 1979 premiere, Peter Colley’s comically-dark thriller, I’ll Be Back Before Midnight, was chosen by MADC to kick off its Playhouse productions.

Written with a spine-chilling mixture of suspense and shocks and with just the right amount of comedy, Colley’s combination of both will be staged at the Clubrooms in Santa Venera. It is being directed by Colin Azzopardi.

The script centres around a couple, Greg andJan, who are trying to make a fresh start in an isolated farmhouse.

Jan has spent several months in hospital following a nervous breakdown, but Greg believes she will complete her recovery.

However, unsettling things start to happen almost as soon as they arrive. First, Greg’s sister Laura, played by Becky d’Ugo, pays a visit, much to Jan’s dismay. Then there is George, the rather strange and slightly-demented old farmer who lives nearby.

As the play develops, so do the characters – in unexpected ways

The couple’s attempt to spend time together dramatically turns into a roller-coaster ride of thrills, suspense and humour with the occurrences of a nightmare of frightening events and murder.

Azzopardi believes that the play appeals to those who like a good murder mystery mixed with a bit of comedy. On the other hand, to those with a weak heart or who get spooked easily, it may not.

With a career in films, Azzopardi appreciates that theatre is a different experience and both media offer their challenges, but he enjoys both worlds and finds them just as stimulating.

“Directing a murder mystery can be quite challenging as the director has to find a balance, protecting the plot line and not giving anything away too soon,” says Azzopardi.

“As the play develops, so do the characters – in unexpected ways,” he adds.

Steffi Thake plays the part of Jan, Gianni Selvaggi is Greg and Joe Depasquale is George the Farmer.
