A total of 125 prison inmates are attending some form of in-house educational programme, while nine others have been granted prison leave to follow courses in tourism, engineering and the maritime sector.

In addition, 32 others are doing some form of community work with local councils or religious institutions.

Home Affairs Minister Carmelo Abela unveiled the figures after he yesterday presented certificates to 13 inmates who completed a six-week course on behaviour and skills management at the Corradino Correctional Facility. The programme was organised in collaboration with the NGO Mid-Dlam Għad-Dawl, which is this year marking its 20th anniversary.

Mr Abela praised the NGO’s efforts, but said society in general had to do its part by giving a second chance to those willing to rehabilitate.

He noted that inmates were also being encouraged to learn some form of trade, such as curtain making and soft furnishings, in a number of workshops within the facility. In addition, they would also receive a fifth of the profits from any products sold, which went to a special account.

Mid-Dlam Għad-Dawl director George Busuttil spoke about their efforts to create more awareness in society on issues like parole. He added that the NGO would soon be announcing the results of a survey carried out recently.
