A 35-year-old man was yesterday charged with usury and living off the earnings of a prostitute.

Peter Borg, from Mosta, pleaded not guilty to loaning money to a woman against high interest rates, living off her earnings, threatening her and harassing her on and before Saturday. He was also charged with relapsing.

His lawyers, Jason Azzopardi and Kris Busietta, made a request for bail but the prosecuting police inspector, Yvonne Farrugia, argued that Mr Borg may try to influence the witnesses – the woman involved in the case and another individual.

Magistrate Claire Stafrace Zammit granted Mr Borg bail on the condition he does not approach the woman and does not leave his home before 8am while being back by 6pm.

She bound him by a €1,000 deposit and a personal guarantee of €10,000.
