Two reserved parking spots sprouted up in front of the old University building in St Paul Street, Valletta, last week, exacerbating the parking problem in the area. On that same stretch of road, there are already two parking slots reserved for a ministry and the university has its own private parking area (right).

Best of both worlds

Two citrus festivals were held over two consecutive Sundays: one in Lija, the other at San Anton Gardens. Incidentally, the Lija local council this year complained of lack of funds from the central government. Could the council and the President’s Office not join forces and organise one event?

Motorists cornered

By law, vehicles cannot be parked too close to a corner, yet, the Sliema local council still decided to instal parking bays within such ‘no go’ areas, blatantly misguiding drivers. To add insult to injury, wardens then fine motorists who are found to be making use of such spaces.

Shorn a bit too far

It is such a shame that someone should be allowed to damage the pretty ornamental hedges and shrubs at Ġnien Kunsill Lokali, in Nadur. The plants have been very crudely hacked and it will take a long time for them to grow and look attractive again. Meanwhile, the area where so many people enjoy walking looks ugly and depressing. Sadly, it is a similar story in Archpriest Martin Camilleri Square, where the trees now look so ugly and stunted.

Red alert

The head of the Ebola response team told this newspaper that, although the risk of the irregular immigrants who arrived last week having the deadly virus was low, every precaution was taken. And, yet, the press carried pictures showing rescuers wearing protective gear transferring into an ambulance a man who appeared to be in a sheet, not a special enclosed stretcher. The scene was far removed from what happened during the Ebola exercise in early November.

King of the road

A selfish statistics office employee – he leaves details on the dashboard – regularly blocks the exit from St James Ditch in Valletta. This photo shows his car in the middle of the road because the vehicles parked to the right had already driven off.
