Two weeks ago, I had to undergo heart surgery. It is an experience that challenges the courage, will and strength of anyone who has to do it.

However, it was this experience that gave me the opportunity to confirm what a remarkable and dedicated surgeon was assigned to me. He is there every day, including Sundays. I have dedicated my life to serving others but I confess I feel dwarfed by this remarkable man.

The staff at the Cardiac Ward is infected by his dedication. They are indeed a group of nurses and nursing aides who are dedicated completely to the good of the patients.

A British national who went through the same operation that I did told me: ‘‘Our health has a lot to learn from yours.’’

How proud I felt as a Maltese to hear this.

The only complaint I have is the food. I have no doubt that the contractor who supplies the food for the patients does his utmost to ensure that they get the best food. I am also convinced that the hospital management means well. However, the food served needs a radical change

Most of the patients at the cardiac wards are either diabetic or have high blood pressure. How come then that the menu only offers white bread, pies and sweet dessert?

How come the soups and other foods are salty? I suspect that all the soups served are ‘packet soups’.

The vegetables served seem to be frozen produce. When our farmers produce such good vegetables why is the contractor serving frozen ones?

True, the hospital management conducts surveys about the food. This is not enough. The doctors and nurses should be consulted to ensure that the food served is good for the patients.

Finally, I would also like to express my thanks to the head of the cardiac team.
