Reading the article written by Philip Rizzo (January 20) about children and adults with additional needs reminded me of the wonderful years I had spent working in the field.

Their loving attitude, their desire to learn, their loyalty, their trust and the respect that they showed towards all around them, even towards those that lacked in respect towards them, were truly an example to everyone.

These people deserve at long last to be treated as normal citizens, even though I wonder what the word ‘normal’ really means – we use it so freely and often to hurt our brothers and sisters with it.

It’s about time mentalities changed and we stopped this social bullying. As Rizzo pointed out, such people are a blessing to those who get to know them. Diversity enriches life because it is part of life’s beauty.
