According to a report in Times of Malta, legal experts have said that if George Farrugia’s presidential pardon is withdrawn by the government, this could complicate matters for the police in the pending cases that they have instituted against former Enemalta officials in connection with the oil procurement corruption allegations.

If this is truly the case, then either the government should urgently legislate to remove this legal problem, if this is possible, or enact a law to abolish the granting of presidential pardons in future, again, if this is constitutionally possible.

Otherwise, there is more danger in having people who are given a presidential pardon knowing that they do not have to reveal all they know because the pardon will not be withdrawn as it might complicate matters for the police.

The police may have instituted legal proceedings against someone who may have been mentioned by the pardoned person but who may have kept secret the names of other, much more important people who may have been involved in the case the pardoned person was originally accused of.
