I refer to the article about the reform of blasphemy laws (‘Plans for reform of 1930s blasphemy laws’, The Sunday Times of Malta, January 18). It is important to differentiate between blasphemy and obscenity. Blasphemy involves an insult to God and his saints.

I believe all religions should be respected but religious fanatics must also respect those who do not share their views.

Terrorism in the name of God and religion can never be condoned, but at the same time, certain insults against faith have to be toned down.

This does not mean that religion and its administrators cannot be criticised, but such criticism must be conducted with restraint. Pope Francis has already spoken on this topic. Perhaps I wish for the impossible, but it is essential that an open dialogue be held between all concerned.

In Malta, the blasphemy laws have been in abeyance for decades. People insult God and the saints for no particular reason. Swearing is second nature to certain people. Surely this is not conductive to democratic Malta?

If I understood correctly, the idea is that blasphemy against all religions should be treated equally. If one insults God, the idea is that he or she should not be prosecuted. But suppose the same vile and obscene words are used against the President of the Republic, the Prime Minister or any other politician, would that be condoned in the name of fairness?

Let us by all means study the laws in question and amend them. At the same time, let us not be hypocritical and try to gag any religious teaching.

In modern Malta, no one is obliged to follow any creed. No religion in Malta, furthermore, must impose any restrictions on its followers and believers.

Everyone should be free to join and abandon any religion. It is up to one’s conscience.
