Seventy-five schools have been provided automated external defibrillator (AEDs) thanks to the €140,000 donated by the public at last year’s bicycle marathon.

The annual event, organised by teachers, students and parents of the Boys’ Secondary School, Ħamrun and the Association of Lyceum Past Students (ALPS), aims to raise money to install AEDs in all local schools, tertiary education institution and other organisations that work with children.

AEDs are portable electronic devices that can diagnose life-threatening cardiac conditions and treat them through electrical therapy, allowing the heart to re-establish an effective rhythm.

The money raised last year was also used to sponsor three basic life support courses and training for teachers and school staff and first aid training.

This year’s edition of the marathon will take place from March 13 to 15.
