Lydia Buttigieg was awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in musicology from the School of Music, University of Durham, UK.
Buttigieg’s doctoral thesis, entitled ‘Carmelo Pace (1906-1993 the career and creative achievement of a 20th-century Maltese composer in social and cultural context’, provides a critical account of one of the most prominent 20th century Maltese composers and the first to experiment with a post-tonal harmonic language.
Buttigieg further investigated the Maltese musical life during and before Pace’s life, focusing on matters of particular importance for understanding his creative development and the nature of his musical output.
Buttigieg’s thesis was highly commended for outstanding research and analytical project work.
Buttigieg graduated with a BA Hons in piano performance from the University of Malta in 2004, a FLCM in piano accompaniment from the London College of Music in 2011 and a LTCL and LLCM from Trinity College of London and London College of Music in 1993 and 1994 respectively.
