Actor and comedian Rowan Atkinson is selling his F1 McLaren supercar - despite it being involved in a crash which warranted one of the largest repair bills of all time.

The Mr Bean and Blackadder star said it was "time for it (the car) to be enjoyed by someone else" having bought it new nearly two decades ago.

The car has a top speed of 240mph, but Atkinson said the majority of the 41,000 miles on the clock were undertaken while on the school run or visiting the shops.

He told the Daily Telegraph's Cars motoring supplement: "I bought it for the quality of the thinking that went into its design, and now it has become a thing of value, it is time for it to be enjoyed by someone else."

The McLaren spent a year undergoing extensive repairs after Atkinson crashed it in August 2011.

The screen star was driving his F1 supercar when it spun around several times, ran into a tree and a lamppost and caught fire on the A605 in Haddon, Cambridgeshire.

Atkinson's repair bill was said to be close to £1 million - the highest ever recorded in Britain at the time.

He told the Cars supplement: "It's so quiet, so comfortable that you can use it - and enjoy it - anywhere. Most of the miles I have done it in are journeys you might do in any car - to the supermarket or doing a school run."

The supercar, which is expected to attract offers around the £10 million mark, will be sold by specialists Taylor and Crawley of London.
