The manager of Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna's Malta At War museum in Vittoriosa this afternoon admitted to misappropriation and theft of visitors' proceeds.

The court heard the man resorted to this to rake in extra cash because he could not make ends meet with his €1,000-a-month salary.

Stephen Anthony Camilleri, 32, from Attard, admitted to declaring fewer visitors and pocketing entrance fees.

Magistrate Audrey Demicoli jailed him for two years suspended for four years and gave him six months to pay back the €7,000.

Police Inspector Anna Marie Xuereb said the report was filed "with a heavy heart" by Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna, who said they considered Mr Camilleri as one of their best museum managers.

However, when they realised what was happening through CCTV footage, they felt they had no option but to file the report. She also said he cooperated with the police and admitted he could not make ends meet with his salary, from which he had to pay for the child support of his six-year-old daughter.

Police Inspector Saviour Baldacchino also prosecuted. Lawyer Vince Micallef appeared for the man.
