According to the Archbishop’s Curia, 1,387 Church marriages were registered in Malta last year. We hope all these marriages will be successful and that none of them end up in a separation. But is this possible? In my view, it is.

The basic rule to follow is to enter marriage as a servant. Servants live for others. Embark on marriage with the strong conviction that you can only be successful in your married life if you are of a continuous service to your spouse and children.

In marriage see what you can give to your family rather than what your family can give to you. Put yourself last and on Christ’s infallible word: “The last shall come first” (Mt 20,16).

Never take marriage and married life for granted. An examination of conscience every now and then with regard to your behaviour in marriage helps you maintain your married life strong.

Marital problems do arise from time to time. Temptations do crop up in married life, especially to be stubborn and separate. It is possible to see separation as a solution but it will not be the solution. By God’s grace, dialogue, consultation, patience and time, married persons can come to a lasting solution for the benefit of the whole family.

Let married couples remember that there is no service without sacrifice, no successful married life without self-denial.

Their glory should be in how much they serve.
