Mnemonic colonial residue lingers on as seen in the letter by correspondent Joseph Xuereb (January 16) thanking God for the British when they came to ‘save’ Malta from the French two centuries ago.

Not all seem to agree.

On January 18, 1884, Maltese government council member Zaccaria Roncali told the then British governor on the Island: Patres nostri peccaverunt et non sunt, meaning ‘Our fathers sinned and are no more’ when referring to the British coming to Malta.
