Alpine Skiing: Lindsey Vonn became the most successful female in Alpine skiing World Cup history when she won a Super-G yesterday, her 63rd victory in the competition. American Vonn was tied with Austrian Annemarie Moser-Proell (1970-80) on 62 wins after her triumph in Sunday’s downhill at Cortina D’Ampezzo. The 2010 Olympic champion, winner of three downhills since her return in December from a 12-month injury absence, skied flawlessly yesterday to clock a time of one minute 27.03 seconds. “It’s really a perfect comeback, it’s like a dream,” Vonn said after finishing 0.85 seconds ahead of World Cup champion Anna Fenninger of Austria. Liechtenstein’s Tina Weirather was third, 0.92 seconds behind.

Rugby Union: Lock Wenceslas Lauret has been called up in the France squad to replace the injured Charles Ollivon ahead of next month’s Six Nations opener against Scotland. Bayonne number eight Ollivon picked up a shoulder injury in a European Challenge Cup game against La Rochelle on Saturday and is likely to be out of action for two weeks. France start their Six Nations campaign against Scotland on February 7.

Tennis: Retired Australian Open champion Li Na (picture) told the centre court crowd at Melbourne Park yesterday that she was expecting her first child with her husband and former coach Jiang Shan. “Me and Dennis (Jiang), we are so excited. Our first child will be out this summer,” the Chinese two-time grand slam champion told Rod Laver Arena in a ceremony before the night session on day one of the Australian Open, sparking cheers from the terraces. “I think Dennis is doing a good job. He just made one ace.”

Cricket: Former Australian leg-spin bowler Stuart MacGill has begun legal action against Cricket Australia (CA), suing his former employers for more than A$2.5 million ($2.05 million) over lost earnings. MacGill, 43, filed a writ in the Victorian Supreme Court yesterday, claiming injury payments after his retirement from test cricket in May 2008. MacGill’s lawyers said he suffered multiple injuries during his career and has some ongoing health issues. According to the writ, CA failed to pay MacGill A$1.6 million while he was injured and unable to play.

Golf: Matias Dominguez has become the first Chilean player to qualify for the Masters in more than 50 years after winning the Latin America Amateur Championship. Domin-guez, who is ranked 421 in the world, won by one shot at the Pilar Golf Club in Argentina and he will now take his place at Augusta National in April, having finished with an 11 under 277 total. The 22-year-old had looked to be cruising to the victory, with a three-shot lead over Alejandro Tosti after nine holes, but this was closed to a single stroke before the Chilean held on for the victory.

Formula One: Formula One world champions Mercedes are to unveil this year’s car on the morning of the opening day of pre-season testing on February 1. Nico Rosberg will be the first of Mercedes’ drivers behind the wheel of the F1 W06 Hybrid at the Circuito de Jerez in Spain. Rosberg will run again on day three, with reigning double champion Lewis Hamilton to drive on days two and four. “Everybody in Brackley, Brixworth and Stuttgart has put a great amount of effort into creating the latest Silver Arrow and I thank them for their efforts so far,” team chief Toto Wolff said. “We are excited to see how the car performs when it begins running.”

Basketball, NBA: Tyreke Evans’ driving layup with under two seconds left on the clock clinched a 95-93 win for the New Orleans Pelicans over the Toronto Raptors. DeMar DeRozan had looked like sending the game into overtime by sinking two free-throws to tie it up at 93 each, but Evans, who scored 26 points in total for the Pelicans, secured a last-gasp victory for the visitors.
