Giovinco: Juventus and Italy playmaker Sebastian Giovinco is set to join Major League Soccer side Toronto FC on a four-year deal, the Canadian and Italian media reported yesterday. They said an announcement was expectedly imminently for the transfer of the 27-year-old ‘Atomic Ant’, who will be out of contract with the Serie A leaders in July. There was no comment from either club. Canadian media reported the deal would be worth US $7 million a year.

Africa Cup: Yannick Bolasie scored midway through the second half to hand the Democratic Republic of Congo a deserved 1-1 draw after falling behind early against Zambia in the opening Group B game of the African Nations Cup yesterday. Given Singuluma struck home the opener in the second minute at Estadio de Ebibeyn but Congo fought back to earn a point with Bolasie striking home with a powerful shot after 66 minutes.

Strachan: Gordon Strachan will help the Scottish Football Association find a new performance director. The Scotland manager will be joined by ex-national team bosses Andy Roxburgh and Walter Smith, plus Scottish FA chief executive Stewart Regan, to whittle down more than 40 serious applicants looking to succeed Mark Wotte.

Fan arrested: A Derby fan has been arrested after running on to the pitch after Saturday’s game against Nottingham Forest and making contact with a Forest player, police said. The incident came at the end of the Championship match at the iPro stadium, which Forest won 2-1. Witnesses saw a supporter run on after the final whistle and try to throw a punch at Forest defender Kelvin Wilson, before confronting a handful of other visiting players.

Gyan: Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan is a major doubt for today’s African Nations Cup Group C opener against Senegal after being diagnosed with a mild case of malaria. The former Sunderland forward spent Saturday night in hospital but was released yesterday.
