Tourists in Malta have been targeted by a campaign to promote sustainable transport over the past two years.

During 2013 and 2014, the Local Councils’ Association used tourist information offices in Malta and Gozo to distribute an information pack to visitors.

Based on the fact that the islands face seasonal changes in transport demand and congestion because of high levels of car use, the pack explained alternative options to hiring a private car in English, German and Italian.

The association also set up a large billboard in Sliema to advertise sustainable transport through the European See More project, as well as organising a photo competition and workshops and seminars on the subject.

The Intelligent Energy Europe-funded project aims to introduce energy-efficient transport solutions for visitors in eight coastal tourist regions of Europe.

Other participating regions are: Balearic Islands, Bohuslän, Forli-Cesena, Dobrich, Pomerania, Madeira and Limassol.
