A man who works as a project coordinator at Mater Dei Hospital was yesterday charged with attempting to steal cash from an employee’s handbag.

Mario Montebello, 29, from Żejtun, was accused of attempting to steal about €300 in cash on Friday morning. He was also charged with relapsing.

Before Magistrate Carol Peralta, the accused denied the charges brought against him.

Police inspector Jason Sultana said there were two witnesses who saw him rummaging through a handbag of an employee in the accounts department.

He was granted bail against a deposit of €600 and a €3,000 personal guarantee. He was also ordered not to speak to the prosecution’s witnesses.

Lawyer Franco Debono appear­ed for the accused.
