Goal-line tech: Serie A is set to introduce goal-line technology from next season after the Italian FA gave its go-ahead yesterday. “Our meeting this morning has opened the way to the use of goalline technology in our country,” Italian FA chief Carlo Tavecchio said in a statement. “I am convinced that its use from the start of next season is inescapable.”

Jewell: Paul Jewell has decided to take legal advice following his shock departure from West Brom. Just a week after joining new head coach Tony Pulis at the Hawthorns, Jewell surprisingly left the club on Tuesday night. No explanation has so far been given as to why former Bradford, Wigan, Ipswich and Derby boss Jewell has gone, either by the man himself, Pulis or the club.

Maloney: Leicester are closing in on the signing of Scotland international Shaun Maloney after meeting Wigan’s valuation for the winger. Reports said the Premier League club have agreed a fee in the region of £1m for Maloney, whose deal at the DW Stadium runs out in the summer. Earlier this month Latics manager Malky Mackay had revealed “four or five clubs” had expressed an interest in the 31-year-old while also confirming one team, believed to be Leicester City, had seen an initial offer rebuffed.

Friendlies: New York City FC, the newly-formed sister club of Manchester City, are to play two friendlies in Manchester next month. The American club, who will enter Major League Soccer in March, have announced they will take on Scottish side St Mirren and Danish outfit Brondby at the City Football Academy.

Carlisle: Clarke Carlisle, the former chairman of England’s Professional Football Association is “getting better and stronger each day” as he continues his recovery from a collision with a lorry last month, his wife said yesterday. “Thank you again for asking after Clarke. He is getting better & stronger each day,” Gemma Carlisle tweeted.

Gyan: Experienced striker Asa-moah Gyan has emerged as an injury worry ahead of Ghana’s opening Africa Cup fixture against Senegal on Monday. Gyan picked up an injury in training on Tuesday that played a role in forcing the cancellation of a proposed friendly against Freiburg.
