The European Union has approved funding of €675,000 to help in the restoration of the original roof of the Sacra Infermeria (The Mediterranean Conference Centre) in Valletta.

The project, which will cost a total of €796,466, will also involve the restoration of a staircase leading to the roof of the building, so that visitors may be able to enjoy the magnificent harbour view from there, Tourism Minister Edward Zammit Lewis said.
He underlined the importance of the Mediterranean Conference Centre, and pointed out that the government is setting up the Conventions Malta Agency which will work with destination management companies to attract more conference travel to Malta, especially during the off-peak months.

Parliamentary Secretary Ian Borg said the funds underlined the importance which the government was giving to tourism.

The project is expected to be completed by the end of this year. He pointed out that EU funds are also being restored for the restoration of forts St Elmo and St Angelo.
