Thousands greeted Pope Francis as he arrived in Sri Lanka for a two-day trip, the first papal visit to the country since its civil war ended in 2009.

The country has suffered from deadly fighting between religions, but the recent election of a new government has sparked hopes of peace.

In a speech, Pope Francis appeared to support an inquiry into war crimes committed during the 26-year conflict.

"The process of healing also needs to include the pursuit of truth, not for the sake of opening old wounds, but rather as a necessary means of promoting justice, healing and unity."

Thousands in Colombo lined the streets to catch a glimpse of the head of the Catholic Church in his popemobile.

The pope will be in Sri Lanka for two days before heading to the Philippines
